In 1960 a song called Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini was a hit not only on the radio but for the sale of all bikini swimsuits. Until then the two piece was seen as too risqué and not mainstream enough to be accepted but soon after that song, surf movies with girls in bikinis were all the rage.

Now I am sure that there are plenty of yellow polka dot bikinis still around but they are not as plentiful as other colors are. A polka dot bikini in general is easy to find due to the fact that dots are a top trend for spring / summer 2011. Whether you prefer a sporty bikini or an itsy bitsy one make sure to have at least  one polka dot one in your wardrobe.

The Juicy Couture Pink Polka Dot Triangle Bikini is a sporty yet sexy bikini. The pink and white polka dot top has a striped chest band with decorative center bow. The pink and white polka dot bottoms for this suit are on the skimpy side and have side ties. Wear this bikini with a pair of oversized white sunglasses and a great beach bag.

Juicy Couture Pink Polka Dot Triangle Bikini

A sporty retro inspired bathing suit is the Nina Swimwear Barberella Bikini in Polka Dots. The top is a scoop halter neck and offers support and comfort. You can lounge or play in the ocean in this suit knowing that everything is going to stay where it is supposed to. The bottoms of the bikini have leather accents that can be easily removed when being washed. This does make me wonder though if this suit can get wet at all without ruining the leather. This is a question that most definitely needs to be resolved before buying and wearing this suit near the water.

Nina Swimwear Barberella Bikini in Polka Dots

You can never go wrong with a classic black and white outfit, this applies to swimwear as well. The Seventh wonderland Polka Dot Knot Bikini is a black and white bikini with a white knot detailing in the center. This bandeau style bikini has ruching at the white panel knot area giving it a bit more detailing to an already great suit. The bottom half is black and white polka dot as well and has decorative knot detailing at its sides. My favorite part of this suit is that the polka dots are two different sizes making this a very unique swimsuit.

Seventh Wonderland Polka Dot Knot Bikini

Bikini swimwear has come a long way in the past 50 years in terms of style and fashion. You have to wonder a bit though where we would be if not for that fateful song about a yellow polka dot bikini.

For me polka dots always put a smile on my face. I really do not know what is is about them but I have always been drawn to dots ever since I was very young. Even today I have dots on my dishware. As much as I like dots though, for some reason, I do not have too muck clothing with dots on them but I have been on a quest to find some great dotted clothing for Spring and Summer 2011. I am particularly looking for some great polka dot dresses because I tend to wear jeans or shorts with a shirt and I am also trying to break that pattern. My favorite thing about all the polka dot dresses that I have found is that all also incorporate a second Spring 2011 trend.

The first dotted dress that I have found is the ROZAE R.N. Mixed Maxi Dress. The thing that I like the most about this dress is the mix of patterns on it. The top has a small band of polka dots followed by a section of shell shaped flowers then a vertical stripe section at the waist   ending with a polka dot skirt. The other factor that draws me to this dress is that it is a maxi dress which are high on my spring 2011 shopping list.

Another polka dot dress that I really like is Club Monaco Georgia Dress. This is a navy blue with white dots sheer dress that comes with a slip lining so there is no worry about having to find the right thing to wear under the dress. Since it is sheer it will be a great dress for summer as well.

The  Alice + Olivia Lulu Polka Dot Dress is the most feminine and girly polka dot that I have found. Not only is it pink but it has a three tiers of ruffles at the bottom and lace at the v-neck top.  This though is not a dress if you need to wear a bra because the dress has an open back.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs Day Dots Dress is very different from all of the other dresses. It has multiple colprs of overlapping dots and is more casual than the others. The only think I am unsure about with this dress is the shoulders since they are so pointy. Perhaps though they will lay down a bit when worn and washed.
