Madewell is a brand that has been around since 1937. Originally a workwear company based in Massachusetts, Madewell  started out as a denim jean company that made highly durable long lasting jeans of the highest of quality. Eventually they expanded to clothing other than denim. Perfectly fitting tee shirts, chambray shirts that can be worn for a variety of occasions, and timeless leather boots and bags are only a  few of many great items that can be found from Madewell.

One of the unique aspects of Madewell is that each type of clothing has its own label so your jeans will have a different label than your shoes or bag does but the common thread is that all of them are going to be high quality and long lasting. The main label is Madewell which is used for all of their denim like jeans, jackets, and shirts. Buckley labels are used for clothing that has a vintage or menswear vibe to it. Examples of Buckley clothing are vests, blazers, and trousers.  Perfectly fitting tee shirts and tank tops come with the Hi-Line label attached to them. 1937 Accessories is self expanitory but if you are unsure, it is used exclusively for the ultra cool shoes, bags, and jewelry.  Wearmaster is used for heritage inspired outerwear made from the softest of wools or tumbled leather. Since Madewell started out making denim, it only makes sense that the majority of their clothing today is denim. There are so many different cuts and styles of jeans that can be found but a few of my favorites are the dark wash flat front flare leg Vintage Rocker Jeans, the 5 pocket  Skinny High Riser Jeans with 11″ leg openings, and the Shrunken Chambray Boys Shirt. The Chambray shirt can be worn with so many different looks like jeans, maxi skirts, or pants. The shirt itself is timeless and classic, has worn spots and is in a vintage faded blue color so it will last you more than one season and will look great year after year.

This season the hottest style of denim jeans are flares / bell-bottoms. There is no difference between a flare and a bell bottom jean, it is only what you or the designer prefer to call this type of jean.  No matter what you call the jean type by definition they are going to be jeans that are fitted from the waist to the knees and then will flare out creating a bell shape.

There is no one universal look for a flare jean. These jeans vary from one brand to another and even from one style to another greatly. There are low rise, medium rise, and high rise flare jeans. While everyone can wear regular rise jeans and most can wear a low rise jean, you need to be careful if you want a high rise jean if you are petite. A high rise jean is going to make you look shorter than you already are. Another thing to consider when you are shopping for flare / bell-bottom jeans is the amount of flare the actual jean has. The wider the flare the shorter you will look as well so if you are petite it is best to stick with a not so dramatic flare.

While most denim jeans no matter the style are going to be a shade of blue, there are plenty of black or white jeans to choose. For Spring 2011 one of the biggest color trends is white so you should consider at least one pair of white flare jeans in your wardrobe.

Black jeans seem to be a bit dressier than blue jeans and there are plenty of great black flare jeans to buy. Just like all flare jeans please keep in mind your body shape when purchasing them.

5.J Brand Gigi Cropped Flare Jeans are quite different from most flare jeans since they are a crop leg. If you are petite then these are not the best jean for you because crop jeans already make you look short and the flare accentuates this.

While I personally prefer a lighter wash flare denim jean, there are plenty of people who like the darker washes and there are plenty of these dark wash jeans to buy. The amount of flare varies as well as the height of the waist. If you are petite keep in mind that a high waist flare jean is not going to be the most flattering fit on you and will make you look shorter and wider than you really are so a lower waist less flared jean is your best bet. If you are taller than 5’5″ you should not have this problem so feel free to experiment with different waist heights and flares.

1.Current/Elliott The High Rise Bell Jeans. These Current/Elliott jeans are minimally distressed and have a high waist. They are pefect for casually days at the office, casually paired with a t-shirt for the weekends, or paired with heels and a blouse or tank to for a night out.
2.Rich & Skinny Bikini Flare in Dark Star jeans have a vintage feel to them and still have a dark overall color. These jeans are skinny and snug to the knees and then they have a modest flare through the legs.
3. J Brand Kiki High Rise Flare Jeansare another great high rise flare jean. These jeans have some whiskering giving them a vintage feel to them. These are a good choice if you are looking for a casual high rise flare jean.
4.  If you are a fan of jeggings then you will love the Blank Denim Pull On Flare Jeans. These are a pull on jean and give you all the comfort your current jeggings do but have a fashionable flare to them. These jeans are a great buy for all shapes and sizes.
5.  The perfect jean for those petite women. The True Religion Petite Joey Flare Jeans feature the True Religion signature joey lowrise but are scaled down for those that are petite. The jeans are mildly distressed but overall are a clean dark rinse denim flare jean.
6.True Religion Carrie Flare Jeans are a bit distressed  and have a low rise so they are great for all shapes and sizes.

Last night I watched the movie The Runaways starrign Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie and it made me think how happy I am that the fashions from the 1970s are back. While I enjoy all the crochet clothes that are popular, it is really the bell bottom and flare jeans that I like the most.

I love a great pair of flare jeans that look like they could have been preserved from the 70s and to me that means that they are faded and possibly distressed. I am not particularly drawn to really dark wash denim, especially when the weather is warm.
